Winter checks without opening the hive

Use external checks for disturbance and security; seek experienced help before opening in winter.

Check from outside

In winter, avoid routine frame inspections. BBKA advises occasional checks that hives have not been disturbed and that stores are sufficient. From outside, look for a displaced roof, damage, blocked entrance, signs of disturbance or an insecure stand. Do not repeatedly tap or open a hive to check whether bees are alive.

Weather and local conditions differ, and an external sign may not reveal the colony’s full condition. If you have a specific concern, contact your mentor or local association for advice on whether any intervention is appropriate. Keep notes of checks and follow the equipment maker’s instructions for winter preparation.

Sting safety: A sting can happen even with protective clothing. Scrape a visible sting out promptly. If you have had a strong reaction, speak with your GP before beekeeping and do not inspect alone. BBKA getting started.
