Choose a suitable window

Weather, colony temperament, forage and the purpose of the visit all affect whether opening a hive is sensible. Avoid opening a colony in cold, wet or very windy conditions unless there is a compelling welfare reason and you have experienced guidance. Use local conditions and your mentor’s advice to choose a time, rather than relying on a fixed hour of the day.

Prepare before opening so the hive is exposed for as little time as practical. Use a calm sequence, keep frames over the hive, avoid sudden movements and return comb in order. Stop if conditions deteriorate or you cannot work safely. Record why you inspected and what you found.

For weekly active-season checks, see BBKA seasonal advice. For handling technique, use NBU best-practice guidance. NBU BPG 2 · BBKA seasonal overview.

Sting safety: A sting can happen even with protective clothing. Scrape a visible sting out promptly. If you have had a strong reaction, speak with your GP before beekeeping and do not inspect alone. BBKA getting started.
